Maurice Ravel (1875–1937) is the most French composer France ever produced — not in the sense of adopting a national style, but in the sense of having a personality perfectly calibrated to French aesthetic values: precision, clarity, elegance, and a certain emotional reserve that is not the same as coldness. He spent ten years at the Paris Conservatoire without winning the Prix de Rome (he tried five times; his failure in 1905 caused a scandal that forced the Conservatory to reform its juries). He was the most technically accomplished orchestrator of his generation, and he knew it.

Ravel's compositional philosophy was inseparable from his approach to craft: every piece should do exactly what it set out to do, with nothing extraneous. His piano writing is as distinctive as Debussy's but harder and more exact — Ravel composed the Miroirs and Gaspard de la nuit as exercises in precision, and the latter (especially the third movement, Scarbo) remains one of the most difficult pieces in the standard repertoire. He described his own aesthetic as the search for 'a music that is clear, clean, precise'

The orchestration is where Ravel changed the language of 20th-century music. Boléro — a 17-minute piece built from a single repeated theme and an ever-growing orchestration — is the clearest example of his approach: take the simplest possible material and saturate it with color until it becomes overwhelming. His other major works — Ma mère l'Oye (Mother Goose), Le gibet, Daphnis et Chloé, Tzigane — show a composer who thought in terms of color first and melody second.
